Apple iPad Air 6 could launch this October and may be the only refreshed iPad from the lineup this year, as per a new Weibo rumor and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. Currently in its fifth-generation, the iPad Air is offered with the Apple M1 chipset and is due for an upgrade.
As spotted by MacRumors, the Weibo post says, “Only the iPad Air series should be updated this year,” and that other models in the iPad portfolio—the ‘mini’ and the ‘Pro’—would not be updated this year. MacRumors says that the Weibo account sharing this information has a good track record of accurately reporting Apple-related information. However, like with all rumors, this too, should be taken with a grain of salt.
Mark Gurman has also added to the credibility of this update, as he thinks Apple may release the new iPad Air via a press release and subsequent marketing launch video, instead of organizing a full-fledged event for it. “I’m not sure they have enough to draw people down to Cupertino to watch the video like they do for this launch,” he said, referring to the iPhone 15 launch tomorrow on September 12.
The outgoing iPad Air was last updated almost a year and a half ago, back in March 2022, and is due for an update. It isn’t clear what Apple could offer with the iPad Air sixth-generation, but considering the M2 chipset is here to stay, the iPhone maker could add that to the iPad Air as well—bringing it in line with the more expensive iPad Pro.
With that said, Apple is going to launch the iPhone 15 series tomorrow at its ‘Wonderlust’ event. At the event, the brand is also expected to reveal the next-generation Apple Watch Ultra, Apple Watch Series 9, and possibly a USB-C charging case for the AirPods Pro.
