In 1969, a Nevada man built a desert home from junk; today, Thunder Mountain is a free attraction

Thunder Mountain Monument in Nevada features sculptures created from discarded materials by Frank Van Zant. This unique roadside attraction developed from his personal vision to honor Native American history. After a fire in 1983, the site faced preservation challenges until it was recognized as a historic site in 1992. The monument is maintained today with visitor donations and a caretaker’s assistance.
