Google Pixel devices have been doing well lately.
Google has sold 37.9 million Pixel devices since the inaugural lineup was launched back in 2016, almost eight years ago, IDC has revealed.
Google has released eight generations of its Pixel devices since 2016, starting with the original Pixel and Pixel XL, and now launching the Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro last week. During this time, it has managed to sell nearly 40 million devices, with 10 million sold just last year, as revealed by IDC.
According to IDC VP Francisco Jeronimo, Google has sold 37.9 million Pixel devices since the inaugural lineup was launched back in 2016, almost eight years ago. Moreover, he notes that Google Pixel sales have been growing at double-digit rates in recent years. This is certainly good news for Google Pixel fans who want the lineup to succeed, and with the Pixel 8 series just launched, it could contribute further to this figure.
Notably, Google’s Pixel main lineup was absent from markets like India for three generations after the Pixel 3, as Google skipped launching the Pixel 6 series, the Pixel 5, and the Pixel 4 series in India. However, it did introduce A-series models like the Pixel 3a and the Pixel 4a. The company’s renewed focus on the Indian market only came in 2022 when it brought back flagships to the country with the Pixel 7 series.
Pixel devices have also been performing well in other Asian regions, such as Japan, where they have reportedly taken market share from Apple. According to Counter Point, as reported by Bloomberg, Google Pixel devices now hold 12 percent of the smartphone market in Japan, while iPhone’s share dropped from 58% to 46% as of Q2 2023.
Additionally, reports suggest that most of the thermal issues related to its Tensor chipsets have been resolved with the Pixel 8 series. With Google committing to 7 years of OS updates, this may create further incentive for people to start buying Pixel devices, especially in developed economies like Japan and the US.
However, it’s worth noting that the Pixel 8 series has seen a significant price increase this year, with the Pixel 8 priced at Rs 75,999 and the Pixel 8 Pro at Rs 1,06,999 in India, and $699 for the Pixel 8 and $999 for the Pixel 8 Pro in the US. It remains to be seen how the markets will react to these price hikes, as expectations for these phones have grown considerably, now that they are in the same flagship territory as Apple and Samsung.
