WhatsApp for Android is getting the passkeys feature.

WhatsApp for Android is getting the passkeys feature.

After Google, WhatsApp has now started rolling out the support for passkeys, allowing users to login security without a password.

WhatsApp has announced that the app is getting support for passwordless login using passkeys on Android. This means that users will be able to log in to the app using biometrics like fingerprints, face, or a PIN during the initial setup.

Taking to X (formerly known as Twitter), WhatsApp said, “Android users can easily and securely log back in with passkeys only your face, finger print, or pin unlocks your WhatsApp account.”

Notably, the feature was available for beta testers last month in September, so it was only a matter of when the feature would be available for all users. And of course, it is now rolling out to Android users.

This, comes after Google recently started asking its users to set up passkeys for effortless and passwordless logins.

With more and more apps now turning to passkeys as a way to sign in, the future—where one may not have to use a password ever again—is coming soon. But until then, apps like WhatsApp, which are used by a lot of people, continue to add support gradually.

It isn’t clear when WhatsApp passkey support will roll out for iOS users, but now that it is rolling out to Android, the rollout for iOS shouldn’t be too far off.

In related news, WhatsApp is said to be working on implementing a feature for WhatsApp web that will potentially enable users to easily search for specific messages they sent on a particular date. Per WABetaInfo, this feature could allow users to select a date in WhatsApp Web from a calendar interface.
