The new iPhone 15 series does not support fast charging, even with USB C port
Apple’s new iPhone 15 models get the popular USB C charging tech but the underlying features have been limited and the charging speed has not changed.
The iPhone 15 series feels like a major upgrade over its predecessor, at least in terms of the hardware features. You also have the USB C port for the first time on an iPhone, and there is no question that Apple was forced into making this change by external factors. The new charging standard is available on all the iPhone 15 series models, which includes the vanilla iPhone 15.
However, the iPhone 15 Pros get the faster USB C 3.0 version, which means the data transfer speed will be up to 10Gbps, as the company mentioned during the event.
But one also expects that an iPhone with a USB C port will offer faster charging speed than before and those claims can be vouched by the likes of Xiaomi, Oppo and OnePlus which have phones with 200W charging speeds in the market. The new iPhone 15 series, especially the Pro and Pro Max variants support the same charging speeds as the last year’s iPhones.
Apple did not go into the details about the charging speeds of the Rs 1,34,900 and Rs 1,59,900 iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, respectively which means there is no change. And when you hear details like 50 per cent charge in 30 minutes, it becomes evident that the company continues to dish out one of the slowest charging speeds on smartphones you can get in this period.
Even the wireless charging standard that the new iPhone 15 series supports, Qi2 Wireless, is not even compatible with many chargers in the market as of now. So, unless Apple or other brands like Belkin come out with compatible units, the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max buyers will have to rely on their slow charging speeds to juice up the battery.
The two big differences that you get with the USB C charging port on an iPhone are that you can connect the device to an external 4K display and also use it to charge the Apple AirPods (with USB C connector) and Apple Watch, thanks but the built-in wired reverse charging feature. It’s not just Apple that is guilty of giving slow charging speeds on USB C, as even Samsung and Google have been equal culprits in this regard, and we are hoping that changes in the coming year.
