Google Pixel camera app will work on phones running the Android 14 version for now but what about the non-Pixel phones?

Google has renamed its camera app which was earlier called Google Camera. The new version is called Pixel Camera, which is hardly surprising from the brand and helps the company link it with the Pixel smartphones.

The new Pixel Camera app is live on the Play Store but it seems the new version is limited to the new Android 14 version that is currently available for a host of Pixel smartphones, the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet. But here’s the bigger question that most of you might have, does the new Pixel Camera app also get new features? Well, the answer is a straight no, and it seems Google has just renamed the app and nothing else is new for the users. Even with the newly named app, you have different devices getting different versions.

The Pixel 7 Pro model along with the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet get the Pixel Camera app version 9.0, while the latest Pixel 8 and the Pixel 8 Pro models have been given the 9.1 version of the same camera app.

Interestingly, the Pixel Camera is also compatible with the Wear OS smartwatches that are paired to Pixel smartphones. And even here, you need the smartwatch to be running Wear OS 3 version or the latest version. It would have been nice to see Google bring some AI smartness to the Pixel Camera app, just to show consumers that it can provide the camera prowess to other Pixel phones.

Many of you might also be wondering if the renamed camera app will be available to non-Pixel smartphones anytime soon. Unfortunately, Google has not shared any plans to do that for now but we do expect the changes to be made all across Android in the near future.

The new Pixel 8 series phones have launched in India and other countries earlier this month. The new Pixel 8 is priced at Rs 75,999 while the Pixel 8 Pro costs well above a lakh at Rs 1,06,999 this year in the country.
