Fossils of an intact root network, pollen, and spores discovered near the South Pole reveal a temperate rainforest existed during the Cretaceous period. This ancient ecosystem, found in a sediment core from the Amundsen Sea, indicates West Antarctica was ice-free and supported dense vegetation with an average temperature of 12 degrees Celsius.
